Oakland freshman Bethany Watterworth claims final Summit League Player of the Week honor
After dropping a career-high 32 points in an 82-68 win over IPFW on Saturday and helping Oakland secure the No. 2 seed at The Summit League Tournament, freshman Bethany Watterworth has earned the final Summit League Player of the Week award for this season.
The freshman’s 32 points helped the Golden Grizzlies outscore the Mastodons’ bench 50-11 in the game. Watterworth shot 60 percent (12 of 20) from the field and 70 percent (7 of 10) from the free-throw line, while connecting on 1 of 2 3-point attempts. The Lake Orion native also grabbed three rebounds, dished out two assists and recorded a block, while committing only one turnover in the victory.
Watterworth’s performance also marked the first time since 2008 that an Oakland player has scored 30 points in a game. Teammate Hanna Reising was the last to do this, having scored 32 against South Dakota State in an overtime showdown on Feb. 2, 2008.
The Golden Grizzlies will face Western Illinois Saturday at 3:30 in the Summit Tournament quarterfinals in Sioux Falls, S.D.
